How to identify your mac model and why it matters

Once upon a time it was a simple task to identify your Mac model, it was just on a label on the front, now however, its all a lot more complicated............

How to identify your exact model from your serial number

From the IMac onwards, Apple have released less and less detail on the hardware installed in a machine, making it more and more difficult to identify the various different models and therefore track down the correct upgrade/replacement/shiny new gizmo for your machine. If you call or chat with us, we will ask you for your serial number, this will almost always allow us to identify the exact model of your machine, although there are occasions when even this is not foolproof.

The easiest way to locate the Serial Number for a Mac is to select "About This Mac" under the Apple Menu on the computer and click the "More Info..." button.

You should see a window similar to this one and in this case the Serial Number is underlined in red.

If that's not an option, you should find the serial number, along with a number of other numbers on the bottom or back of your machine. If your machine has user a removable battery pack it is probably underneath the battery pack.

I have my serial number, now what?

Now you are armed with this valuable piece of information you can either get in touch with us and we can advise you of the correct upgrade/replacement/shiny new gizmo for your machine. Alternatively, if it's 3am or you're just not feeling very chatty, you can check it at https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/ where you can find pretty much everything you could ever need or indeed, want to know about your mac. Understanding it all though, that's a whole other help article!
